2021-23 Year in Review

As I wrap up my first year as your Program Director and head coach at LOWPO, I can see more clearly what makes this such a special club and I’m eager to work with you all to build on this last year. I would like to provide a synopsis on all our athletes have accomplished this last year.

After the COVID-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on water polo in the Pacific Northwest in 2020, things started to get back to normal as 2021 unfolded. Despite the many obstacles and limitations, LOWPO has grown into the largest water polo club in Oregon, boasting over 70 year-round athletes. With this many committed athletes, we were able to enter over 30 teams into various tournaments and scrimmages up and down the West Coast. Locally, LOWPO could be counted on to field multiple 11U and 14U teams; foreshadowing the bright future of this club.

A few highlights from the last few months:

  • In early May our 14U boys traveled to San Diego to compete in the San Diego County Cup and placed 8th, competing against some of the top teams in the country.

  • July was a very busy time for the club:
    • We started out the month with over 15 athletes, in our 14U and 12U, spending 4 days in Seattle training with Northwest Water Polo club. Aside from practicing twice a day, athletes were able to bond as a team with days filled with fun coach lead activities like tie dying shirts, going to the Space Needle and going to the movies.
    • Our 18 HS boys also had a training trip, they traveled all over Southern California training/scrimmaging with over 15 different local teams in addition to competing in the John Hale tournament.
    • Wrapping up our summer session, LOWPO traveled to San Jose to compete in the 2022 Junior Olympics, the largest youth tournament in the world. Our 14U Boys battled to 10th place in the Gold division. While our combo LOWPO/ Northwest girls 18U and 16U teams placed 4th and 12th in their respective divisions.

In order to accomplish all this we have relied heavily on parent volunteers but none more than our Parent Chair, Chirs Alexander. Without Chris’ tireless support it would have been impossible to organize, plan and communicate everything we have been able to accomplish this past year and beyond.

Best of luck to all HS athletes in their fall season. For all age group athletes, please keep an eye out for our fall session as we have some fun opportunities coming up.
